Did they also get that from Paganism or is it just something from cartoons?

The picture of the angel on the right shoulder and the devil on the left is a funny, cartoonish depiction of a very real human dilemma--the struggle between good and evil. Don't you often feel tugs within yourself, one to do the right thing, and one to do the wrong thing?

I don't know the answer to your question for sure, but I imagine that the image you describe was invented by a cartoonist.

That said, the Bible does include advice and episodes of devilish temptation. The most famous is Satan trying to tempt Jesus in the desert, depicted in the Gospels of Matthew and Luke. There are also angelic warnings, encouragements, and visitations: Gabriel visiting Zechariah, then Mary; angels attending Jesus after the Devil's tempation, and also in Gethsemene; angels visiting Lot's family and then escorting them out of Sodom; an angel breaking Peter out of jail.

In fact, one epistle does tell of Satan and the archangel Michael arguing over Moses' body. I believe Satan and Michael also battle it out in the book of Revelation. Offhand, I can't think of any more Biblical descriptions of direct angel-devil confrontation.

I think it was Psychology. Either that or Ornithology. For those of you who don't speak greek, Ornithology means The study of Chickens. That's it. They definately got it from Ornithology.
