Go to your local shelter and check out the dogs there. They will have mixed breeds and pure breads.
If you want to find a small dog that is not yappy, you should definitely find a mixed breed. My experience is that most small dogs(pure breads) are yappy.

The Labradoodle is a great dog. It is a cross between a lab and a poodle. They come in three different sizes, they are full of love and great with children ( we got ours when our son was only 7 months old). They are very easy to train and very loyal. Madi is the most amazing dog I have ever had.

It sounds to me like you want a Lab. They're full of love, very easy to train, and not yappy. Don't get a terrier. They bark. You might want a chinese Crested. If you don't like hairless dogs search for Powderpuff chinese Crested.

Bichon Frise- demand total devotion from their owner, and a labour intensive (require a lot of grooming), but are quiet, full of love, small, ant too intelligent for their own good. Easy to train, but very short attention spans... If you want a lap dog, this is it. They are happiest sleeping on your lap. You can find Bichon rescues that are not going to cost you anything but love, or you can find a reputable breeder and pay from $600 up for a puppy.

Shih Tzu Mine is only 10lbs and and the other at full weight will only be about 8 or 9 lbs. They are quite lap dogs. But if u get one you should pad train especilly if you live in a area that gets snow the snow and cold weather freezes there paws. try this web site i listed below it gives a list of shih tzu breeders in the country also try your news paper but please dont buy from a pet store they usually get puppies from puppy mills.
