I'm certain this has been asked before but why exactly are homosexuals not allowed in the military? I understand they can sign up as long as they follow the 'don't ask, don't tell' rule. This should be obvious, but one's sexual preference has nothing to their ability to protect and serve this country. I know there are a lot of people in the military that agree... but there are just as many that disagree. What is the cause of this sentiment? Is it that half of our country is ready to move forward and the other half isn't (of course on a smaller scale, just speaking of the military)? If you have a good reason for this, please reply. If my information needs to be corrected, as I said before, please reply... This absolutely doesn't matter, though I know some buffoons will wonder (because of the nature of the question), but I am a heterosexual.

There are many, many, many LGBT soldiers that have served their country well and proudly. Not allowing LGBT people to stay in the Armed Forces is prejudice and bigotry, pure and simple - as also evidenced in some of the answers given.

I didn't know that the whole purpose of a group of soldiers was to have sex with each other - I thought they were more professional than that. (sarcasm) Therefore having LGBT people interspersed will have NO effect on "cohesiveness," since they are basically just the same as the rest of the soldiers. People doing a JOB should never be having sex with each other anyway.
What, do some people think that LGBT people are so "uncontrollable" that they will just insist on having sex with unwilling people? Please, get a grip on reality.

The same arguments were used against allowing blacks and women into the military. We can see that the military has NOT in fact imploded due to the removal of these prejudices. The military only needs to take this additional step to be fair, just, and equal to all.

I think that the Military is worried that if they allow open homosexuality. They will be held liable for gay bashing attacks. All branches are a cross section of society and that means not everyone in the military is good. I was in 8years and the women are still dealing with sexual assault and harrasment. Could you imagine what a openly gay man would have to deal with. We always suspected who may be gay but because noone could ask them it was just speculation and noone harrassed them because they could get in trouble under the policy also. That is just my opinion but I think its all about the brass not wanting to take responsibility and you also have to contend with housing. If someone is openly gay they may have to be roomed alone and that brings money issues up too.

As for my personal opinion I think sexuality has nothing to do with how well you serve the country and I believe you should be able to serve openly. As for unit cohesiveness we had an openly gay man with us in Iraq and he roomed with straight men and there was never an issue (besides the fact he was unlikeable as a person) 8 Yrs USMC, 3 Yrs Army National Guard

There's nothing in military regulations that prevents homosexuals from serving in the armed forces. The military does not bar homosexuals, but does bar homosexual conduct (that means, you cannot have gay sex, or be in a gay relationship while you're in the military).

The military requires mentally capable people and people with mental abnormalities are not allowed in.

In my mind they shouldn't be allowed to vote either. I t is their unnatural ways that are leading to the down turn of our society

i think it is just because people don't understand it. To the majority of people it is still not accepted and to be doing everyday task with a gay guy just makes people feel uncomfortable. I don't know if you realize this but in training and overseas you are doing this like taking showers or whatever in community showers and as a straight guy i would feel pretty uncomfortable. I put it like this. it is like racism how long did it take to accomplish that and some people still don't like it same thing.

You are correct in that homos can do the job just as well but thats not the reason. The basic reason is the morale and cohesiveness of the unit. Any known homo tears that principle apart and that just can't happen in a combat situation.

I guess some people are either so homophobic or hate homosexuals so much that they can't deal with them. I think if you disclose that you are gay in the military, you get discharged (I'm not certain about that). Religious bias against gays is the biggest factor in this problem I think.

Probably because the stereotype of a homo is a sissie. I figure if they're tough enough to take a dick in the ***, they can take a bullet too.
