I personally try to spend as little as possible, because to me a hotel is basically just a place to sleep. I try to find reasonably priced hotels that are clean and well cared for and are well located (in safe neighborhoods and convenient to transportation). In the United States, I can usually find good places in suburban areas or small towns for $50 - $60 a night (sometimes less), and $75 - $80 in major cities.

I personally can't justify paying $200 - $300 a night anywhere. When I've gone to New York, I've stayed in Queens or New Jersey for quite reasonable prices at places that were just a short train ride from Manhattan.

Depending on things I prefer to stay in a cheaper run down type of place. Then I can spend more on other things to see and do in the area and use the motel - hotel for just sleeping and cleaning up. I've spent as little as the Mid $ 20's but hate to admit as much as $ 120 but find mostly I spend in the Mid $ 40's-$ 50's. But others prefer the Top class rooms its all in what you want your money to go for.

Where?

If I'm going to New York City, I'm going to spend more ($200-$300/night) than if I go to a small town ($75 a night).

It's all about the class of hotel. I try to stay consistent, unless I'm looking for something special (e.g., a B&B). And then pay what it costs to get that, in the city I'm in.

I try to average around 5usd a night. Over a period of time longer than 6 mo. this can lead to significant savings for long term travel. Room service generally leaves something to be desired though. I don't pay 5 for most rooms, but it averages out as I don't pay for many nights on the road (sleeping in car/van, tent, train station, alley way (best night of sleep I've had in Italy)).

I don't pay for accommodation. I stay with a person or people.. For example, the last recent visit, I stayed with my boyfriend's mother.

But then again, I always go to Barbados.
