the ankle usually is a bit painful. infact just about anywhere around your feet will hurt. I have been doing tattoosfor over 30 yrs and have them on my ankle and feet, I have done tattoos on just about every part of the human body. I do not intentionally do a painful tattoo but tattoos hurt, the needle's have to break your skin and this is always going to hurt. You have to deserve the tattoo and want to get one for a good reason, dont' just go out to get one just because you want one, it is a mark for life!
I have tattoos all over my own body and they never stop hurting when I get a new one.
The best thing that you can do is relax and just get one if you want it bad enough, tattoos are great to express your self to others and make a statment, tell your story, as for the pain, you just have to grn and bare it, you can do it!

A few inches above the ankle will hurt but it won't be unbearable, since there is muscle there, the bonier the area the more painful. Once the outline is done which won't take very long, if it's small to medium sized tattoo it won't hurt anymore and the outline is the shortest part of the process. I have quite a few tattoos and I am positive that you will love it once it's done. :0)

Above the ankle shouldn't be that bad. It all depends on how big / detailed a tattoo your gettting and how long it will take. If your unsure ask the tattoo artist to use the tattooing needle without the ink so you can get an idea.

I have a tattoo barely above my ankle and it didn't hurt at all--I was quite surprised. I have one on my breast and one on my back. The one on my breast hurt like mad (burned), the one on my back only hurt at the edges. But, really, every person has a different pain tolerance, so it may get hot to you. The good news, if it does hurt, it won't for long because your body responds to pain by releasing endorphins that will act like a natural painkiller. Good Luck on loving your tattoo. I love mine, they are worth it. One piece of advice, I hope you watched the tattooist that you are going to use to make sure that he/she does good work. You can get a messed up tattoo from a bad artist. It can be fixed, but only after it has healed, and that could be a bit embarrassing.

I have only had the outsides of my biceps tattooed but the closest thing I can compare it to .....it's like having tiny little sparks falling down on you over and over. They go out as soon as they hit the skin...but there's always more of them falling and hitting.. It doesn't hurt so much as it is annoying. The next day (and for about 4 to 6 days later) its going to feel like a sunburn. The key is to relax, listen to music or talk to a friend to distract you. Use the best artist you can find. go to my 360 page and click on the dragon tattoo in my blog. My dragon was 12 hours old in that picture...no scabs..no bleeding.
I am doing 8 to 9 hours under the needles next month so I've been doing my research.....here is the best article I could find on pain as charted by body location
http://www.tattooz.net/default.cfm?sitem...
I hope this helps

it does hurt...the degree to which it hurts however varies from person to person. To some it's not bad and to some it's painful. Sorry to be so vague...This is what helped me....I stared at a dot on the floor or the wall and just totally concentrated on that and my breathing. Did this both when I got my tattoo and when I was in labor prior to having a baby. Also - just remember WHY you're getting it done....it won't be too long and after, you'll have a piece of art on yourself! It is bearable though...you won't run out of the place screaming... :) Best wishes!

Yes, it hurts about as much as you would imagine needles going barely in and out of your skin over and over hurts. But the pain is temporary, the tattoo is permanent, and that's your goal, right?
If you're worried about pain, maybe tattoos aren't for you. For many people, myself included, the pain is all part of the experience and ends up being sort of addictingly enjoyable.
Weird? Maybe.
Hardcore? Definitely.

I have three tat's and all three of them felt like I was being strung by a whole lot of bees after all you are being struck with a needle like a million to get it done. Also it depends on where it will be going, husband has 2 on his chest and they both hurt like hell. the 3 on his arm hurt like someione punched him in the arm, the one on his leg he says was the one that hurt the least and that onhis wrist hurt the worst of all, only bone there. The three that I have on my legs hurt just a little I'm pretty meaty in that section of my body.

I have one about an inch above my ankle, and it wasn't too bad. More annoying than anything. But it does depend on your pain threshold. Make sure you have a full stomach when you start, not so full you feel sick, but comfortable. It'll keep your blood sugar levels up.
Good luck, it is worth it

well, i don't have one on my ankle but i do have one on each of my feet and they hurt very bad. i guess it depends on how well you take pain. but a tattoo shouldn't be gotten based on a day's worth of thought. i would rate the pain level for my foot tattoo at a 7
