How about another Westie? Generally getting a dog of the opposite sex is best as long as your animals are spayed/neutered. Females can fight worse than males! Before bringing any new dog/puppy onto your property, introduce them on leash in a neutral area AWAY FROM YOUR CAR. Your dog may actually feel the need to defend his property if you just dump another dog onto his turf. If things are going well on neural ground, try introducing them near your car. If that goes well then they should be able to get along on your property though there are always exceptions. If you have an extremely dominant dog, try to get a more middle of the road dog. Another dominant dog, unless you know how to handle them, is a disaster waiting to happen. Likewise, a submissive dog will probably have its personality crushed because it is busy trying not to push the alpha's buttons. If your dog is submissive, just do the opposite. If your dog is a middle of the road dog, any personality should be okay, again provided you can handle a dominant dog. If your dog lacks training or manners, I would work on those first. Dogs do learn from each other and whatever your dog is doing now is potentially what your new dog will do. To see how he reacts to other dogs, ask a friend if you can introduce him to their dog ON LEASH to see how he reacts. Good luck with whatever you choose.

I would suggest a parson russel terrier or maybe a jack russel terrier. I have one of each, they are very fun. The parson russel terrier's name is gunner. He is extreamly cute and weights about 25 lbs. He is very hyper and fun. You might not be able to find one in a pound, but I would suggest looking for one there first. Dogs in pounds really need owners. You can go to petfinder.com and find all kinds of breeds along with pictures of dogs that are in pounds. You should always help those who need more first. Then I'd try a newspaper. YOu can find them at krogers for 99 cents like tuesday through saturday. Parson russel terriers are kind of bossy but not agressive. they are very cute and entergetic. If you tell your dog "no" sternly and give him a time out if he gets too wound up and starts playing rough, he should settle down. If your dog is hyper it shouldn't be much of a problem though. If you get a jack russel, your only problem is, is that they are hyper, but not extremely hyper, ya know. be sure your westie is spaid/neutered and vaccined before you get another dog . you can look up parson russel terriers on line and see how cute they are.
P.S. A cute girl dog name is Mitzy

well westies are known to be independent sometimes stubborn BUT not all dogs are the same...so all dogs have different behavioral issues. I suggest getting a good tempered medium dog, maybe slightly bigger because your westie will try t dominate since he's been the king pup of the house. Do proper introdcution. make sure your westie won't feel "left out"
good luck though

I have an Cairn terrier and they look just like a WEstie but are brown and are the same size. Cairns are hyper too. Cairns and Westies go along fine.

First you need to get your dog to play with other ones and see how he will react to it. Also make sure he is okay with you around other dogs, some dogs can be very jealous and therefore can fight or sometimes kill other dogs for it. Once he is used to being introduce to other dogs and is OK with it then get a dog... But make sure you get a dog from a shelter the are the ones that need a home the most

Other small dogs with high energy are the best bets. Westies, scotties, jack russels.
I would avoid dogs much larger than beagles, and stay away from the really small breeds, like Yorkies and chi hua huas.

I would have thought any dog - from a tiny pup - could be introduced to your dog and brought up in his/her company. After all, they are sociable animals. BTW, your dog shouldn't need to be extremely hyper - is he exercised well every day? Is he stimulated enough? Why do you want another dog anyway? If it is just for companionship for your other dog, forget about it! He is obviously quite happy with just you.

you should go with a dog that is small that way it doesn't fight. Make sure your dog gets along with it first. Basically get the dog that yours likes and make sure they are both as hyper with on another.

i would go with a west highland again, just get a puppy, for some reason an adult dog will accept a pup better than another adult dog. have fun!
