A female cat is called a queen. When cats mate, the female is very choosy and will be very aggressive to the toms who she does not approve of.
For the record, toms used to be called ram cats. In 17060, a book was published about a cat's adventures and his name was "Tom the Cat." The book was very popular and people have been calling male cats toms since then.
In England, cats used to be referred to as gramalkins. In Shakespeare's "Macbeth," one of the three witches called her cat by this name.
A non-pedigreed cat is is called a moggie, sometimes spelled moggy as non-pedigreed dogs are called mongrels. It is believed that this began in London. Originally, it was a dialect version of Maggie which meant an old woman who was disheveled. There were many stray scruffy cats.

It's called a female cat! A "queen" is only used to refer to a breeding female cat that is pregnant. A "tom" is used to refer to a stray, un-neutered male cat. A breeding male cat is actually called a "stud".
Once the kittens are born, the breeding male cat is referred to as the "sire" and the female is referred to as the "dame".

The female is called a queen! Which is a highly suitable name for an animal that rules us as well as they do!
If you've ever had a pregnant cat you'll know what I mean!
