If you lived in a country with a dictator and he commanded that everyone must believe in God or be killed, would you lie and say that you believed in God to keep from being killed? There's no middle road. You are being questioned with a gun to your head and if you say no or maybe, you will be killed. What would u say and why?
You must include a yes or no in your answer. Don't just beat around the bush.

Most of you said yes, you would lie to save your life. One of your own once said, "If you view isn't worth defending, then it's no view at all." So you have just told me your view isn't worth defending.

I would say yes. I can lie without feeling guilty! After that, I would move to Canada... besides... I want to move there anyway.
Edit-
Lady- theres an obvious difference between upholding your beliefs and outright stupidity. Having a gun to your head and choosing between death and uttering a few words is kind of a no brainer (actually- that's a bad way to put it seeing that theres no brains involved either way you look at it :P ). A gun to my head would definitely make me willing to fake it.

A lie to prevent a death? No contest, even if it's only my own life. Depending on the religion I could probably fake it very well. I know the theology of most of them.
And no, I wouldn't believe, and yes, I would be risking my life to undermine these violent terrorists. But no point in throwing a life away to no effect.
Now, If I was coupled up to a lie detector as well, I'd declare my atheism as honest belief with pride.

No. The dictator would have to kill me. To me it is a personal decision that I should be able to make without somebody telling me to do so. I am Agnostic. I have the right to be Agnostic. And nobody can tell me to do anything that I might not feel is right for me to do. I will not live a lie simply because I am forced to do so. I would rather be dead then to live and follow the rules of a dictator.

Of course I would lie and say I believed. Just stating I believe doesn't mean I actually do. But, according to your question, I would mean I get to live. It's called learning how to pick you battles.
Now, some out there will say that doing so will be a sign of "weakness". And nothing I say will convince those people otherwise. If they told me I had to believe in pink unicors or die, I would tell them that as well.

Of course, I would lie and say yes. Who wants to be killed? What's your point in asking this question? Anyway, here's some information for you: The Christians conquered Toledo in 1098 and the Jews in Christian Spain prospered, while those in Muslim Spain suffered under the Almohad dynasty. Both Jews and Muslims were involved in the cultural, economic, intellectual, financial and political life of Christian Spain. By the mid-13th century, the Christians controlled most of Spain and increasingly forced Jews to convert to Christianity. Those who converted became known as Marranos or New Christians. Marranos are also known as crypto-Jews because they taught their children and practiced Judaism in secret. During this period, Jews were forced to participate in "religious" disputes with Christians counterparts.
So if they could do it, so could I...I'd say with all sincerity that I believed in god to save my life....but I wouldn't mean it.

Yes...of course I would. No one WANTS to die.
You are soooo wrong. I always defend my beliefs...but not at the expense of my life. You see...you haven't YET figured out that we have just this ONE life to live. Most atheists aren't fundies...we have no belief in a god, but we do love life very much. So life would come first.

To be truthful with you, i won't be able to inform you what i might do. because of the fact if i'm ever in that place i'll do in basic terms what i could do. i'm not mocking your question. i'm certainly purely staying arranged. it fairly is totally a relief to work out somebody ask a valid question. i'm tiring of the juvenile nature of lots of here. they don't characterize my ideals. Sorry to journey their bandwagon some situations. EDIT: i did not say i did not comprehend what i might do, i in basic terms won't be able to demonstrate that advice.

I've been in this situation before. A guy found out I was an atheist and pulled out a pistol and put it to my face and asked if I believed in God now.
I corrected his aim (He'd have done considerable non-lethal damage had he fired, requiring months of surgery to repair... I would have rather died than suffer that) and told him that I didn't believe in any deity so weak as to be contained in a small chunk of copper and lead.
He wandered off in deep confusion, much to my deep relief.

Oh yeah, I'd lie my *** off, with great enthusiasm. I'd spew every bit of happy rhetoric they want to hear... and then go away and keep to my own opinions.
I'm good at being subversive, and it makes no difference at all what others think I think, I know my own truth.

"No. Men should die for lies. But the truth is too precious to die for."

Yes I would Lie!!! I have no rules telling me I shouldn't! What would be the point of dying for a belief? At least if I were alive I'd have a chance to escape!
