Technically, dogs do not have periods, but they go into "heat" or "season."
.Females go into heat about every 6 months. and the heat cycle lasts for 21days.
The heat cycle of the female dog has three parts and lasts about 3 weeks.
The first part lasts anywhere from 3-14 days during which a bloody discharge and swelling of the vaginal area are usually seen.
Next the dog will become receptive to being bred and actively may seek out a male dog. This is the time when she can become pregnant. The discharge may change color at this time and become lighter.
Finally, the discharge will become clearer, the vaginal swelling will diminish and the dog will no longer allow herself to be bred.
While your dog is in heat you must watch her carefully to avoid unwanted breeding and subsequent puppies. If you are not planning on breeding your dog, please have her spayed to help prevent unwanted puppies. It I will also lower her risk to several types of cancer.

Female dogs have a period of six to twelve days approximately twice a year. You can buy pads at any pet store for the dog and also if she is on the couch you should put someing under her. She will have these periods for the rest of her life if not spayed.
Hope this helps

Yes, all bitches(sexually unaltered female dogs) will go through menstrual cycles about twice a year. Some "finely bred" (genetically over-tinkered with, by humans) breeds even seem to get horrible, painful, disabling cramps. I can't say that I have ever noticed this in their wild counterparts.
There are even "doggy painkillers", doggy sanitary napkins, and doggy napkin belts to hold them on.

P.S. This is only if it is a girl...

Unfortunately for you yes she is in heat. Keep her away from the boys! There are pads you can get at the pet store to keep your house clean.
Good Luck
