I used to be scared to death of needles. I couldn't even look at pictures of them. When I got shots I basically had to be held down. It was baddd.

So, I stayed away from them for a while, until I decided I reallly really wanted to get my ear cartilege pierced, and wanting that so much gave me enough courage to go into the piercing place, and by the time I was sitting in the chair with the piercer opening the needle, it was too late to back out. I got the piercing, it hurt like a mofo, and then I was done, and it was incredibly easy.

I was still pretty afraid of needles when I turned 17, but I really wanted to give blood. I made myself go to a blood drive and give. It was scary, and I was panicking, but as soon as the needle went in, it was like "What's the big deal?"

So, I guess what I'm trying to say is that you can get over your fear if you desensitize yourself to what your afraid of. Look at pictures, watch someone get a shot. Try and work up the courage to get blood drawn, or a piercing. Seriously, the whole fear of getting stuck is all about the anticipation. That's what's the worst- panicking before, not the pain of.

As far as getting shots, the last time I got one I didn't feel it go in- i had to ask the nurse if she'd actually done it yet. And getting blood drawn is easy, normally phlebotomists are so experienced that it barely pricks.

This is a very real fear.
It is called "Belonephobia" or fear of sharp objects such as pins or needles.

Three things you can do to help yourself:
1. Get as much factual information about injections and how they work. Talk to your doctor/nurse and ask that they sit down and talk to you about it. When you are getting a shot, ask the nurse to explain what is happening at every step.

2. Coping strategies - distraction techniques can really help. For example, you could take along a teddy bear, or an ipod.( You could also try singing songs, counting to ten..

3. Topical anaesthetic preparations - numbing the nerves These topical anaesthetics have been used in hospitals for many years and are often known as "magic cream".

Good luck with this.

I have had the same phobia all my life. I can't even look at a needle in a magazine. My biggest fear was being diagnosed with diabetes. I was pre-diabetic and had to start testing myself. I was scared to deather and shaking all over the first time I test and actually had to poke myself with a needle. Luckily, the new needles do not hurst when used on the arm. I am getting better with blood tests but am still having a problem with shots. I don't panic for days over it now, so it does get better as you get older. Good Luck.

i had exactly the same fear when i was your age, and a little older, too. in fact, it would take 3 people to hold me down to draw blood. one day, the staff at dr's office went to lunch, because they had been trying for 20 mins and gave up, said they'd try again when they got back. so, my mom had to wait another hour. i thought i was doomed. one day, i was getting blood drawn and i told the lady how hard it was going to be and how scared i was. she said, "you only feel it at the tactile layer, then you can't feel it." i said, "really?" so, i tried it. she was right! when the needle goes in, you feel it a little, then once it is in, you don't feel it or any pain. granted the people have to be trained well, but most are. i had one guy draw blood and i never felt anything. he was that good.

now, when it comes to shots, i apply the same rule, only thing is, some medications will burn or hurt when they go in, no getting around that. i try to avoid those. i have gotten a couple cortizone shots in my shoulder and that was the worst pain i ever had in my life, not kidding. they are supposed to put some kind of numbing agent with those so the pain goes away quickly, but i think they forgot at least on one of them. and, if they didn't, then that is simply one of the worst shots a person can get. but seriously, a few simple words by a nurse changed everything for me as far as needles. the only thing about me is i always have to watch it go in. if i don't watch it, i will jump when they put it in. you might try watching it to see it is no big deal and remember that tactile layer thing. it brought me down off the ceiling anway.

WOW! anxiety is a bummer 'aint it? try and lightn' up. Although your anaiety is real to you, know that needles are to help you. Try and get to the real root of the problem. Why are you so afraid? Did you have a bad experience? Maybe your Dr. will give you a RX for ativan B4 you have a veinapuncture proformed. How about if you take a friend with you? Try and find a cute nurse!!! lol good luck. Well you have a phobia. Why don't you see if you can be refered by your doctor to someone who can help you deal with this. Its a very common fear so you are not alone. You can get over this - although it's not easy i know - phobias are very strong things. I too used to be scared of needles......in the end, i got myself over it, and now i'm fine. Good luck, and don't let this phobia put you off being a doctor! You can do it!x

This sounds like something you really need to get therapy for if you want to enter the medical profession. Maybe you could find a therapist that deals with fears and can help slowly introduce you to needles in a safe atmosphere.

You are not alone. I am 40 and I have it too. Worse, it has lead me to live in fear or anything that requires medical attention. It keeps me away from getting medical checkups and today, I found that I NEED to get tests done.

That is why I am on the internet seeking help.

I have not found it as yet but all I can say is - You are not alone, you are not wierd and no one should yell at you - it only makes it worse.

Search for help. Learn all you can to overcome it. Your mental and physical health depends on it.

You could go see a therapist about this. I am not saying you are crazy; i have a therapist for my ocd. And tell your parents that they're yelling at you makes your fears wears. Try telling them. If it doesn't work, try talking to your close friends or family about it. Hope it helps and that you get to be a doctor one day. :)
