If you're bringing a nice appetizer, that's all you need to bring, although if you want give her a little something, a bottle of wine is still a great idea! They don't need to serve it with the meal.. and don't expect them to as they have probably already chosen an appropriate wine to go with the food. Liqueurs are good too :)
Candles... blech... generic to the point of thoughtlessness. And flowers can be a real nuisance to a hostess who has to find a vase and trim stems while she's trying to entertain! If you bring flowers, bring them IN a vase :)

Apps? Huh? Is that appetizers? If so, you need bring nothing else.
If not, you bring ONE gift - not something separate for husband and wife. Flowers are always appropriate. Wine is good as long as you don't expect it to be served that night. A candle would be appropriate too.

If the party is small, I think wine for you boss and nice flowers for the wife would be appropriate. If it's a large party, than a nice candle is good. Other popular things are room infusers. Its the smell of a candle but is infused threw reeds that are placed in scented oil. Target has nice, less expensive ones. They're in the candle section.

What about flowers? A nice bouquet would be nice.
Candles are a good idea. May I suggest a pillar candle? Perhaps one with a gentle scent in case someone in the house is sensitive to scents. You can place the candle in gift bag with decorative tissue papers.

I can personally recommend the website I have listed here. I am 34 years old and female and someone got me a basket from them (apparently they will do anything you ask) and was extremely happy. Why don't you see what they think? I am a lifer with them now. The products are great!!! They are always happy to help.

If you are bringing the appetizers, then a gift is not required.
I usually give flowers that are in season, i.e., tulips for March are a really cheerful thing to receive.

A few hostess gifts I've received that I appreciated were some flowers (loved those), a desert, and a box of nice chocolates.
