I did that, once, and ended up in the hospital.
Why couldn't the Bible have been written straight forward, easy to understand. What's with all the riddles (parables?). Isn't the Bible supposed to be a type of "instruction manual" on life? If so, then what's with all the secrecy?
Just imagine where we'd be if all our electronics manuals were written like the Bible; not very far, but I suppose that's the problem, isn't it?

Excellent point. If the bible was written by a father who cares, why would he make it so difficult for people to agree on. Even the ones who believe it can't agree on most of it. To me, that shows the book was written by men.

If it were written by a perfect, omnipotent father who wanted his children to live, it would be direct and unmistakable. Everyone who read it would get the same points. Now that would prove to me that it's authentic.

But since it's not that way, the writers as well as the believers have to justify all the different opinions by saying the message is something you need to search for

It takes a spiritally alive person to discern the parables or so-called deep things of the Bible. The good news is if you have been born again you can ask the Holy Spirit on how and when to apply the scriptures to your life. If you haven`t been born then that`s the problem, but one that`s easy to fix: Ask Jesus to come into your heart and fill you with his Holy Sririt so that you may understand the bible.

Much of the Bible is not meant to be taken literally, as "turn the other cheek." Don't think it is a sin to defend yourself. But turn away from a fight if at all possible.

And you are right as far as some of it being a little hard to understand probably because of the translation. Personally, I think I am a good Christian but some would say I am not because I don't and can't quote much of the Bible. But I don't think that really matters much.

actually, Jesus gave the turn the other cheek msg. His point was to not seek confrontation but to seek peace with others. His thinking was very opposite of the prevailing thought and religious leaders. He used parables to help the ppl understand his point. Most of the ppl who followed him around were the poor, uneducated, disenfranchised. Unlike the religious leaders of the day, He wanted to speak to them in a language that they could relate to.

As far as being secretive, when speaking of His deity, he was purposefully vague in most cases because they would have killed him immediately. They were Jews and only knew God as Yahweh. They had absolutely no idea about a trinity. To say that I am God would have been blasphemy to everyone. They would have thought him a lunatic and his ministry could never have gotten off the ground. That is why He performed the miracles (to prove his power) and talked in riddles when referring to exactly who he was.

Life is not as simple as you think it is. I think you know that every cell is quite complicated...
A priest said that humans speak their language, animals have their language and God speaks the language of God...you only have to learn how to hear it. He speaks through Bible, do you expect the manual of life to be like the manual of a computer? life is not a computer, it is something deep, mysterious, compex...you know that, don't you? no man can create life..look just at a simple tree, no man could create it out of a dead thing...life is not just technology and thank God it's not!
There's no secrecy...it's just complexity

That's funny, sorry I guess a trip to the hospital isn't really funny, but you made it sound funny. Turning the other cheek is a mystery to me. I have been a Christian for years and still don't get that one. The only thing I try to remember is to give another chance to someone who wronged me. Go the extra mile to be forgiving. However, if someone has their "dukes" up to punch my face I think I'll run, FAST!

I posted a quote from a book and got a violation for it.

The author asked if the advice to turn the other cheek would have worked for the Jews against the Nazis. He was trying to point out the flaws in it.

It assumes your enemy isn't trying to kill you.

Don't buy into that bible nonsense. It's written in parables so it can be translated to mean anything you want. Pretty silly to follow the word of somthing that was written to suit everyones perception. Don't be a mindless sheep.

well I always laughed a little when people say Jesus instructed everyone to turn the other cheek. He instructed his apostles to sell there acsess garbs and to buy weapons with the money.

Well, in the Bible there's "An eye for an eye", AND there's "Turn the other cheek." Just pick whichever is more convenient.
