I have a 2002 Golf (automatic four door GL) and lately it has been "shifting" and lurching even though i don't have a standard. I will go from 0 to 20 and then the car will lurch forward at the same time it will rev up and the RPMs go up a bit. Then it will be fine until it gets to about 40mph and it will do the same thing again.
It is only doing this right when i get in it after not drivng all night or when i get in it to drive home. it doesnt do it after about 10 minutes of the car being warmed up. What do you think the problem could be?

ok for one thing only standard transmissions have a master and slave cylinder. thats for the one person who suggested that.sounds more like a bad? partially plugged transmission filter.the spark plugs have nothing to do with the transmission shifting. that controls the spark (firing of the fuel in your motor).i had an old escort that shifted funky like that. what you are referring to is slippage of the transmission caused either by low fluid(transmission fluid)or a plugged/fauly filter.i changed the fluid and filter on my escort and it shifted fine from then on. if you have that done be sure whoever does it removes all of the old pan gasket and replaces the filter and fluid and gasket. dont overtighten the transmission pan or you could cause a leak by rupturing the filter. remember spark plugs equal engine spark not transmission shifting.!!!!!!

That problem is probably not specific to VW. I had a Subaru that would do the same thing and it is probably the spark plugs. Have them changed. If that doesn't work, something may be wrong with your transmission (master cylinder), that is slipping and causing a huge rev before re-engaging. Have it fixed before it gets worse!

First check transmission fluid level - done with the motor running and car in park.
If the fluid is at the right level, then take it to an automatic transmission shop and have them look at tightening/loosening the bands.

I have a saturn but I had a similar issue. Check your spark plugs because they could be fried.....that was my problem & my car was fine after I put in new ones.
