I'm not sure, but there are several instances in the Bible where angels are represented with swords.
There were the angels in Eden that surrounded the Tree of Life after the Expulsion of Adam and Eve, the angel with the sword that blocked the path of Baalam and his donkey and the angel with the drawn sword standing on Mount Moriah.

Swords were 'described' and 'depicted' in Medieval times because that was the current technology available to the painters. An angel is not bound in overcoming its foe, or achieving its goal except by the conditions under which the goal must be achieved. Thus, if an angel needs to incarnate on Earth and bring about a change in government, it would not proabably use a sword to accomplish its goals but politics and charisma, although using a sword is not out of the question.

Well, actually, the sword of Christ is His tongue, meaning the truth, which cuts both ways.
But there is another sword - it belongs to satan, and it too is his tongue, which is full of lies and cuts deeply as well.
After Cain was thrown out of the garden, and Angel was put at the gates and that Angel held a flaming sword. Yeah, I quess you could say its the official weapon, why not?!
