I saw something-ko being compared to the same thing-ya. Is it child, or was it just random to show that -ko is female and -ya is male?

something-ko is usually used for a girl's name and something-ya for a boy's name like taku-ya.
"ko" originally means a child. "ya" don't have a specific meaning. It's just used for a boy's name.
What the above two persons said is also true. In the case, "ya" means a shop.

It's a bit hard to explain something without examples.
"Ko" can be used for "child" but also for something small or as a title given to (if I remember correctly) lakes.
Ya is generally used for shops or job titles involving a shop.
Beyond that, you're going to have to give actual examples.
