How old is the child? How long did they train for the race? You need to teach the child that only one person wins a race, and if you consider yourself a loser for not being that one you need to change your outlook. Anyone must understand that they must try their best and be satisfied that they tried their best. They ran a good race, they are not the fastest child at the school, but they can be happy in playing the game.

It really depends on the age.
Mostly you ask if they had fun, What they are going to do next.
If they press you about winning, be honest. Tell them they did wonderful. Doesn't matter if they wandered down the track looking at butterflies. You NEVER tell them they lost or it sucked.
With young children distraction and changing the topic works best.

You don't use sayings on 8 year olds.
Just tell him that was the fastest you have ever seen him run, and he will continue to get better and better.
