I am scheduled for cataract surgery and multifocal wasn't offered as a choice although the info booklets were in the office area. I was just wondering if it had to do with cost or due to scarring on my cornea thanks

It could be due to scarring, but I would think it is probably due to pupil size. The multifocal lens is designed with concentric rings. If your pupil is too small you are unable to use the outer rings and therefore your results are not as good and people will often find that the reading is not very good. Pupil size does not seem to affect the distant vision.

Another reason could be because a lot of people have a lot of halos around lights after the multifocal implant due to the rings. Most people get use to it but because of this side effect it is not recommended by some doctors for certain professions such as people who drive a lot or pilots.

If you are really interested in the multifocal I would suggest contacting your surgeon and asking his reasoning for not recommending it. Some surgeons are just not sold on the benefits yet. Keep in mind that if you do have a multifocal implant it is not guaranteed you will not need reading glasses after. Results can vary. Most people find that they can read a menu, their computer screen or the newspaper but will still need reading glasses for very fine print such as prescription labels.

probably more likely the scarring. Multi focal also is a lot harder to get used to.
