Lately I hear people talking about a supposed "savory" category of food, as in "food can be sweet, salty, spicy, or savory." What foods are considered savory? And am I the only one hearing this term come up a lot more than it used to?

A savory pie is a quiche or other egg based thing in a pie crust as opposed to a sweet pie which would be cherry or pumpkin etc.

I think the main distinction is just between sweet and savory, and sometimes people use the term loosely. A savory food can also be salty or spicy, but generally a sweet food isn't and just leans toward the sugary side.

I think a savory food usually has some "flavor" though, as opposed to simply leaving the sugar out of something (e.g.... I don't think a pancake without the sugar would necessarily be savory). I also tend to think of savory as served warm-hot, but not sure if that's part of the deifnition.

"Savory" is also an herb, but that's not what's being referred to.

Don't know why you're hearing it more unless you're just paying more attention to food and cooking than you did before, or perhaps reading something where the term is just used a lot.
