They find non-fiction boring and only use easy sources, or perhaps it is their culture to do so. Maybe the like what a less reliant source says and want to believe that over something else.

BTW you forgot to mention the Bible.

Some people are sheep and need their information spoon fed to them. Often books claim to based on facts which have been proven wrong but the authors chose to believe in conspiracies rather than science. (Anything about the JFK assignation, the Da Vinci Code, that book claiming aliens taught earthlings how to build pyramids.)

However, there is some good information in some genres. I've learned a lot about history because I read SciFi...not to mention all the science I've learned.
