"Speak out constantly and loudly against them (fundamentalists); Distance yourself from their views; Engage in reasonable dialogue with people of other faiths and no faiths about important issues; Support secularism and equal rights and responsibilities for everyone whatever their worldview. Good idea. Put me down for an order of about 100 million of them so we can start going around to put them up.

You are confusing the term "fundamentalism" with violent intolerance. I don't think that it is accidental that this work is being misused.

Fundamentalism implies taking a particular religion at face value, rather than an interpretation of it. For example, if the Bible says that homosexuality is a sin, a fundamentalist considers it wrong. A liberal or modernist may down play this statement, or say that it just reflects the prevailing cultural prejudices of the people who wrote it.

If people decide to go out an persecute and attack homosexuals, that is a different story. Are we ready to condemn people for believing what is written in the Bible?

To condemn fundamentalism is to undermine religious belief, something that has been going on in this country for decades. We need to understand that not everyone believes the same as we do, but they don't have the right to tell us what to believe, either.

Ironically, to do such a thing would be to be a rather fundamentalist thing to do.

I agree 125% with the sentiment stated. But if someone is going to be enlightened away from fundamentalism, a plaque is not going to do it.

Enlightenment comes from within. It can't be forced.

I'd be in but I don't go to any churches.

I do, however, know of many churches who'd be interested.

it would be easier to have a plaque that said simply: "don't be a jerk." thats far more all-inclusive.
