Does regulation, amateur competition headgear protect your nose from being damaged? I'm assuming not, but wondered if any fighters knew about this.

JC ~
The purpose of a headgear in boxing is to protect a fighter from getting cut from a punch, head butt or elbow. The headgear does give a limited amount of protection from a blow, but not much. This is why you see Professional boxers use these in a gym and why amateurs have to wear them in competition. There are many different types for hand/foot contact sports. I've had my nose broken 7 times with a head gear on and completely shattered once. There are head gears with or without check guards, there's head gears with a a bar going across the entire face (Face-saver) There's head gears with the only things exposed is the chin and there's head gears with the whole face covered with a cage (not meant for boxing) The headgear gives fighters that don't know any better a false sense of security.

I've see plenty of boxers amateur and professional get knocked out cold in the gym with any type of headgear on and I've seen plenty of amateurs get stopped and knocked out in competition with a headgear on.

Thanks for the question JC.

Im an amateur boxer, and the headgear does not keep your face from being damaged...however, you can go on the everlast site, and buy a "facesaver" headgear for $99...it has a bar that goes across your face....it does an ok job, but not a great job, cuz i sparred against a kid wearing that and still gave him a bloody nose...and you cant wear it in amateur competitions

Amen Santana your are right on. I have had my nose broken once sparring and I was wearing what is called Mexican style headgear which provides the cheek bones with some protection. My man Santana! A broken nose seven times! You are one tough son of a gun. You must really have a pretty nose my friend! Joking Brother.
