When I can't seem to just drop off to sleep because thoughts keep racing through my mind, I open a book that isn't too intense, or a magazine with articles that are light and easy reading...something that I know that will make my eyes tired and keep my mind off of what I've been thinking about. Chamomile tea is excellent before bed, too. It makes you sleepy.
If you are anxious about what is going on in your life, however, you may need to talk to someone. I know I sleep much better when things in my life are going smoothly.

That's a common problem. I think of the most bizarre stuff sometimes while trying to fall asleep. I will remember stuff I need to do the next day though - and surprisingly enough, I can still remember it when I wake up the next day.
What I usually do is try to get my mind off of all that stuff by making up sort of a story or something, my current one starts with me falling from a ridiculous height, and finally landing (violently, but somehow without killing me) on the ground in the middle of a desert. Then starting to walk towards some mountains. Make up something that works for you - I usually read or do crosswords before bed, but I also usually get a pretty throrough workout at the gym before I go home, so I am ready to conk out when my head hits the pillow (plus I've been going to work at 6 am most mornings lately, but sometimes when you are overly exhausted it can be just as hard to get to sleep as if you were not at all).

I am dealing with kind of the same problem. I usually begin to think about what i did that day and i usually am afraid not to have mistaken anything on a test that i had that day. It is so frustrating because i don't know very good what i did in it and i always think that i messed everything up. I sometimes remember a song that i liked and it comes into my mind and i can't sleep for a period of time.
The best thing that i do these days is to repeat to myself that "I can't do anything about it anymore" and i suddenly feel asleep. The best solution is to hide the clock because it influences you and to stop using the internet or any media later than 8.30 pm. Maybe you aren't tired enough when you go to bed. If i ain't sleepy i can't sleep well and i also have a bad sleep.

I have found a sleep aid that really works. Valerian root and Melatonin combination.Look them up on the internet and you will see what makes them work. I take 3 of each about 30 minutes before bedtime and I fall asleep within seconds of my head touching the pillow. They are both herbal products so they don't contain any drugs. I wake up refreshed and ready for my day. One disadvantage. The valerian root smells like sour milk or (some say) dog poop. But you get used to it quickly. Good luck.

Try reading something, just for fun. I love to read out of a good novel after getting into bed. If you've had your head in books so much at school that you can't stand to open another one, try a magazine instead. If you like to work out, for instance, keep a few work out magazines nearby your bed.
Also, it sounds like some of this night time thinking is actually productive -- that you're working out some decisions that need to be made. If so, then you'll need to allot another time to make those decisions (maybe driving home in silence rather than with the radio on, etc.)

Trust me, I know EXACTLY what you mean. I have the same problem.
What I try to do, (with my eyes closed attempting to fall asleep) is I focus on how I can only see black. And then when my mind starts to jump to other things, I always try to think of the same thing. For some reason, this will always tire my mind out, and before I know it, I'm asleep.
If you keep having problems with falling asleep and keeping your mind at ease, I suggest seeing a doctor and talking with him/her about sleep aides.
Hope this helps =]

I take about a half dose of nyquil before going to bed... It makes it hard to get up the next day but I am awake after about 10 minutes.

go see a doc. they can giv u sumthing to relax u,and let u fall asleep.
personally i have the same issue. i dont think my mind ever stops. (but i never think of american idol.lol)
anyways,i try to ware myself out during the day. it always used to take me at least 2 hours to fall asleep. i work full time, and i got a dog,and walk her and hour before bed, the fresh air,and exercise, puts me out pretty quick usually.
or theres things like drinking.lol, but exercise is best, like a walk, run, jog before bed.
also u can try teas,or hot lemon, things like that
