Bad things happen to all people in equal proportions.
It's just the "good" who whine about it while the "bad" either see it coming or think (on some level) that they deserve it.

Bad things happen to good people for no reason. It's not karma. It's not destiny. It's not divine retribution. It's not Satanic intervention. Sometimes, **** happens. There's not always any meaning to it; trying to find meaning is an insult to the victims of tragedies, as it suggests that they are merely the means to some end, or that they somehow "deserve" it.
When bad things happen, the correct response is to try to help the people who were hurt in the process; speculating feebly about cosmic reasons for such tragedies doesn't help anybody. People need consolation and friendship when bad things happen to them; they don't need absurd appeals to metaphysical abstractions like karma or sin.

It makes sense to me that it would be karma. You have accumulated both good and bad karma over the course of several births. Really the goal should be to exhaust any karma, and that materializes as a reaction to your past karma. So if you did something bad in your past life and it wasn't taken care of in that life, it will carry over to your next one and something bad will happen that will in a sense "cancel out" the bad karma.

If a large stone falls from a cliff and lands on your head, do you think that you have a better chance of survival because you are a 'good' person? (Whatever that means).
You will most likely die, regardless of your lifestyle.
Volcanoes do not erupt because of human emotions, mountains do not quake because of human behavior and tossing dead virgins (Jesus, 12 year old island girls, whoever) at them is just insane.
Grow up.

I don't believe in karma. good things and bad things happen to everyone, that's life's guarantee.
You don't have to sacrifice yourself though. Sacrifice (give-up) things that separate you from God.
