General Canby was the only General killed during the Indian Wars. He was Killed by Captain Jack, the Chief of The Modoc Indians in Northern California during Peace Talks. Custer was Frocked, a Battle Field Commission not sanctioned by Congress... My Parents and Friends had 75 Acres in New Pine Creek, Oregon at the Ca/Ore border. I grew up hearing the History of that area from Locals and fished on the Reservation...

Custer was a demoted brigadier. When his ego and self assuredness caused his command to be slaughtered at the Little Big Horn (a river) he held the rank of lieutenant colonel.

Actually George had been reduced in rank to a brevet colonel after the civil war, so technically he was not a general.
