It is human nature ( not necessarily nice) to make fun of things that are different from the way it is usually done. Just ignore it.

We have a short-haired Chihuahua named Stanly who has both a sweater and an adjustable-sized jacket. When it's chilly outside, he wears the sweater, when it's cold, the jacket. When it's very cold, we put his sweater on him, then put the jacket on over it. If it's frigid, he stays home. He likes wearing his clothing, he walks with a strut and kind of cocks his head as if to say, "Look at me! I'm cool!" It's really cute. He's really cute.
More than 90% (maybe more than 95%) of the people who comment on our Chihuahua wearing his jacket or sweater say its cute or mention that it's too cold to be outside without a sweater or something like that. Only a few give that "you're weird" look or make ignorant comments. It's just that those people are the ones you remember most.
He's an inside dog, as most Chihuahuas are. He's used to indoor temperatures. He would lose body heat very quickly if he weren't covered by something, and I refuse to walk around carrying him wrapped in a baby's receiving blanket!

You know what? I really don't know why they make fun of dogs that wear jackets. I put hoodies on my 2 when its cold they have short coats, and they do get cold. It saves me a lot of vet bills if they were to get a cold. And they do seem to appeciate it, and wear it with dignity. How would people who laugh at them wearing clothes feel if they had hardly any hair and it was cold or snowing outside? I will dsay one thing though...I can't understand the ones who have those little yappy dogs with long hair or lots of it and they still put clothes on them. Now thats dumb! They have hair, and it keeps them warm. Thats what it was designed for! I am guilty of putting boots on one of my dogs, as it does get icy here in Texas sometimes, and plus she acted hilarious when I put them on her! :D

Its up to the owner wether or not they want the dog to wear a jacket so long as the dog doesn't mind it. I don't think there is anything wrong with dogs wearing jackets.

some dogs actually like them. one of my dogs is a Boston Terrier and he loves them in the winter to keep him warm. My other dog don't like them at all.
People make fun of them and laugh because they are weird but ADORIBLE!
o and i agree that all those other things (hats etc.) are just weird and probably uncomfortable. dogs arn't barbies but sometime just jackets are good!

Because they think it stupid that anyone would care that much about a dog. My shih tzu has a full wardrobe! He only wears clothing in the winter as I keep him short.
He also has a brass frame dog bed and a sealy mattress and fitted sheets!
If someone just smiles when they see your dog in clothing this doesn't automatically mean they are making fun of you or your dog they may just think it cute.

I think that everyone thinks of Paris Hilton when they see a dog in clothing, she's a joke so they have made a joke out of all dogs wearing clothes. It started in Hollywood and has migrated. If you like it and your dog likes it, it doesn't matter what people think, keep your dog happy, it probly helps keep him warm too.

because it strips the poor dog of his pride, and the other dogs tease it. plus, it looks stupid. look at the look on the dog's face next time you put a jacket on him. i put a jacket on my cat once, and he ate my face. face it, clothes arent for animals. they like to be naked.
