My boyfriend invited me to dinner with his mother, aunt and uncle tonight. It's nothing too fancy. It's a bar / restaurant (but almost gourmet food believe it or not). Getting off the phone he said "don't forget to dress for dinner". What does that mean? What should I wear? Can I wear jeans? Help me please!!!

I would recommend a nice skirt and sweater or a dress. By saying "dress for dinner", he's telling you to dress nice - something classy.

If you know the restaurant name, I would call the restaurant and inquire into what people generally wear. Ask if there is a "jacket and tie" policy. I learned this the hard way. My husband took me to a concert on our first date. He told me that the place we were going was "quaint". I wore a dress. What he meant was that the place was standing room only - no chairs, no tables. I should have called ahead.

Good luck!

I wouldn't wear jeans but I really don't think it's formal either. I would wear a nice skirt and top.. maybe even a casual dress if you want (casual meaning not a floor length or cocktail gown)... Try to find something that would fit in either a little dressier or more casual because if you show up in a pair of jeans and the women are in skirts that will look way worse than if you show up in a skirt and everyone else is in jeans.. get it?

Generally, it means to wear better clothes than you would wear for just everyday. So you should consider a skirt or dress or maybe slacks with a nice sweater. If the family is very wealthy or the restaurant is known to be very expensive and has been there forever, wear a good dress and conservative jewelry.

"Dress for dinner" means "dress up".
Don't wear jeans; wear perhaps a pantsuit or a skirt.

To "dress for dinner" is formal.
Wear either a floor length, ankle or calf length gown.
(nothing from knees up)

Do fix your hair...something simply lady-like

Note:
Dress down.....is jeans or slacks
Casual....is tea/cocktail dress
Dressed....is formal

In that setting...nothing too frilly....just something sleek and sexy (form fitting)
