It's been 4 weeks since I electronically filled my state return. I called today to find out what the hold up is in getting my refund back. I was told my return "was selected for review" and that I should have my refund 6 to 8 weeks after the date my state accepted my return.
What exactly happens when a return is reviewed?
Is the government just making sure my numbers are right?

Ok, so if I've been chosen for a simple review...I'd think I should be fine. My returns have never been complicated (1040ez). I have no dependants, investments, deductions, etc. Hopefully, I won't end up being audited.

A review may involve nothing more than having a human compare the figures on your return with the State's records. They may or may not contact you for further information or proof of an amount claimed on your return.

Normally all returns are automatically checked for simple math errors. Those are corrected automatically most of the time without requiring further review.

If you're REALLY unlucky you've been randomly selected for a full line-by-line audit of your return. If so, the State will be inviting you in to review every item on your return. Bring all of your records with you if that happens.

They are basically making sure your numbers are right, but also that your numbers have been accurately reported - meaning they will check to make sure you didn't forget to include any income and aren't over-stating your deductions.
