to do this you simply walk striaght parrallel with him/her and when he/she goes across or attempts to try to go across from you say no! but make sure you don't say it too forcefully because then they will think he/she is doing something really bad and they will feel bad. you can use this technique for tons of others basic stuff and you might want to try and teach them sit, come, and stay. i hope this helps.

You should have the dog walk on you left side, and you hold the lead (with little slack) in your right hand. I am using a prong collar to train my dog (dont let the look of it scare from using it), along with verbal positive reinforcement (no treats!). When you're walking the dog repeat the command 'heal' to the dog, when he is doing it right say 'good heal'. You must always keep walking when you are training the dog to heal, even if the dog is lagging behind keep on walking, you may hurt his feelings a little but it will help him learn.

This method really works, my puppy is 3 months old and he already knows how to heal, and a few other basic commands.

Get a leash, walk the puppy with a short length of leash until it gets good at walking with the short leash. Then begin to give it more. Also puppies get better as they mature so don't expect too much right off. It takes patience and you should reward your puppy with lots of praise when it does well.

When you take the puppy out hold her leash firmly while you both walk. If you hold it tight enough she can only walk on one side, Don't choke her or anything but if your firm the puppy will notice and then she'll learn to walk on only the side she was trained on. Good Luck

It takes time to train a puppy how to walk on a leash properly,
but never let the pup walk ahead of you. Keep the leash short,
so when your walking the dog is walking next to you and when
he's doing it properly reward him. Stop and stand there with
the pup by your side several times also. It just takes time and
alot of patience.

when your on a walk: keep your leash really tight (even if that means you bending down) so she can't go from side to side. and after she gets used to staying there, give her a little more slack. Give her more and more slack after she gets used to it BUT if she starts to pull away from your side then take her back to step one (really tight and close to you).

This will take lots of practice, but eventually you won't need a leash anymore. She will just stay at your side.

edit: also, you may not want to do it with treats because if your dog is as smart as some of mine are, when you don't have a treat,, they won't do it. And that takes FOREVER to correct.

Good luck! :)

I took my dog to obedience school and this is the exercise we used.
Hole the end of the leash giving very little room for him/her to leave your side. Hold a treat in your closed fist at your side. (Let him smell it so he knows it's there.) When he walks by your side properly give him the treat. He will learn to follow the treat and stay right at your side. First give him a treat every couple of minutes. You can eventually train him to take a treat at the end of the walk or not at all. I hope this makes sense. Oh, and your hand will stink of dog treats :-)

Positive reinforcement. Use dog treats. When s/he is walking on the correct side, give her/him a treat. Tell her/him "no" when they cross to the other side, pull her/him back to the correct side, and give verbal praise or treat. It takes a long time, but it is worth it. You may want to use a word like "heal" as well. That will teach them the command, and when they do it, you praise again.

Limit the leash amount that you have... like only allow her to stay by your side and while you are doing this keep saying HEEL your puppy will soon get it... if you need to, then get a gentle leader, THEY ARE AWESOME!! i hope this was helpful!!

the best is to train her on the right. the obedience school told me that. when she gets on the left, pull her over to the right and when she is on the right just leave it and shell learn in a week if you take her on a 1/2 a mile walk or longer everyday. best of luck
