You have to understand that 'hypnosis' is something everyone does all the time. It's nothing special... it's just something different than you're used to experiencing.. at least.. knowing that you're experiencing it. Typically, what people over-generalize as 'hypnosis' is the somnambulistic state, where a person is apparently 'sleeping', yet awake and responsive to suggestions... where the person seemingly has given up their 'control', and ability to think for themselves. This is not the case at all.
You don't have to enter the somnambulistic state to overcome a phobia...
You could go to a hypnotist to get rid of a phobia... there is also a much faster way than traditional hypnosis, using a pattern of NLP (Neurolinguistic Programming) called the Phobia Cure. I have helped dozens of people get rid of their phobias, anywhere from 10 to 20 minutes each... and some of them were skeptical about it, didn't think it would work... especially in that short period of time. You have to consider though, you learned the phobia in an instant, so getting rid of it can be done just as quickly, if you know how. You can even do it yourself... and save some money. Google "Phobia Cure" and you can find many pages with the technique, you can do it yourself. If you are unsuccessful, you could seek out a NLP Practitioner, to help you through it, and use more techniques to reinforce the change... such as anchoring states, and triggering them at key times.
Here are brief explanations of the Phobia Cure process:

http://www2.hawaii.edu/~lady/archive/phobia-2.html
This is much easier and often quicker than going through the traditional 'hypnosis' process, because skepticism and fear, can interfere with success of the subjects state of mind. However, this isn't the CLIENT's problem... Some people will tell you, "not everyone can be hypnotized". This is either out of their ignorance, or lack of ability in themselves as a hypnotist. Bad hypnotists will especially tell this to someone... the fact of the matter is - when a hypnotist or therapist or anyone says "you cannot be hypnotized" it's just another way of saying, "I don't know what the @#%^ I'm doing."... It's simply putting the blame on the subject, rather than having them take the responsibility for not being able to induce the state.
Hearing unsuccessful stories isn't going to help you any. If you can't find a GOOD hypnotist, and you don't get the Phobia Cure working by yourself - find a decent NLP Practitioner, this is one basic, simple technique, yet very powerful... easy to perform... and once you learn it well, you can even help others with their phobias... or even bad memories/feelings.
It sure beats going to westernized therapy for 10+ years, with a very low chance of even feeling slightly better about your phobia. Not to mention flushing your money down the toilet... only you'd probably be better off doing that, because then you wouldn't have wasted your time in addition to the money.
What I've offered you here is an answer, not an explanation of how it works. You don't HAVE to understand how it works, for it to do so. To restrict the amount of text posted in this answer... if you want to learn more about the hypnotic state, trances, and WHY these things work... refer to my blog inside the link below, for a deeper understanding of the functioning of the mind.

I happen to know as a fact that you CAN be hypnotized... but it doesn't work on everyone. There is a certain mindset that some people have that make them prone to suggestion more than other people. Hypnotism has been used successfully to help some people overcome phobias, smoking addictions, and to help people remember to do something that they kept forgetting. That said, the success of hypnotism varies greatly from person to person. You'll never know if it will work without trying it, but make sure you consult with a professional therapist or psychologist. Just having your nutty friend with a hypnotism book is not likely going to work, and there may be more realistic and orthodox ways of dealing with a phobia. Only a professional will really be able to help you figure out what will work best. Good luck!

I was hypnotized to quit smoking and it worked for me. I had a two pack a day habit for about 10 years. I had tried other things to quit smoking, but nothing worked. Finally, I decided to give hypnosis a try after a woman I worked with told me it worked for her and she'd been smoke-free for 15 years. I have now been smoke-free for 16 years. I never felt the urge again and it doesn't bother me to be around smokers either.
I went into it with an open mind. Basically, when you get hypnotized, you have to just go with the flow. You can't sit there and think about it or say things in your mind like, "I don't feel anything!" A good hypnotist will help prepare you for how to get yourself in the frame of mind for the hypnosis to work. Frankly, I was surprised myself that it worked so well, because as I said, I'd unsuccessfully tried several different things to "kick the habit." The trick is to find a good hypnotist.
