Whoa! Don't form your opinion until you read my answer please.
Polygamy is allowed in Islam. However, you must think during the times that the Quran was written. Back in those days, most women depended on men. Have you heard about the prophet's (pbuh) first wife, Khadija? She was successful in her own right. A very good role model for us Muslims. Ok back the to the point. The most horrible thing that could occur to a woman was that her husband would die. How could a woman support herself? It wasn't like nowadays. So a man could help her by taking her hand in marriage even if he was already married, but...
The man has to have PERMISSION from his wife in order to do so! If the wife says no then he is not allowed to marry another wife. Ahh, the rights of women in Islam. I'm going to give you a link that will explain women's rights in Islam.
Now this. Before the Quran was written, men were taking multiple wives. As many as they wanted. The Quran put an end to this by only allowing men to have four women and only if the first wife agrees. However, please note that polygamy is not something that Muslims must do. It is highly discouraged in Islam. What? I can tell that your thinking that. It's highly discourage, but still practiced. Well, darling, people are always going to think differently from you. It's called diversity.
Please, please check out this website. I bet you don't even know that Muslim women are not required to wear the hijab. I love educating people.

"polygamy is specifically one man - many wives and is allowed in Islam where not otherwise forbidden by secular law. "
Polygamy is having multiple spouses at one time, whether male or female. Bigamy is when one man has many wives.
I believe bigamy came about because in ancient times, women were the properties of the men in their lives and they were not considered adults until they were married. In the Middle East, where most people were shepherds, goatherds, etc., men were often killed in tribal warfare over grazing land. This warfare is also why women were enclosed in the home and isolated from the outside world, because the best way to ensure that your tribe will dominate the grazing land is to kill off all of the women. This also explains why the Greeks hid their women away from the world.
To ensure that a woman was protected, a number of safeguards were put in place. One was to make it clear that a woman always belonged to the family of her father, even when married, so that if her husband ever left her or mistreated her, she could return home.
Another safeguard was make it legal that a man could have more than one wife, under certain circumstances. These include widowhood, sterility of the first wife, illness, etc.
So, it's not the system of bigamy that's sexist. It's a way of fixing or softening the consequences of institutional sexism in the society.

no.
What is said in the Quran is that men are allowed to marry 4 wives DEPENDING ON THE SITUATION.
when this was revealed by the prophet
men were going of to wars and fighting and sadly many of them died. So this was meant for the women who had lost their husbands, so they will get protection.
In Islam no matter what, the women are always to be protected and supported financially (so if you don't want to work or get a job you are still getting money by the laws of Islam) either by their father, brother, uncle, grandfather, or husband. Men have to pay for the women to survive. When the men work for the money they are obliged to support the family (wife and children)..but if the women makes money it is her own and does not need to give it to anyone unless she wants to.
BUT if you marry more than one wife you are OBLIGED to treat each one the same way. Examples if you buy one jewelry, or a house, or clothes you must buy the other one that as well. You spend equal time with all of them and treat each fairly.
AND ALSO the Quran allows you to do this but it urges you to try and stay away from this because God knows the nature of humans and it will be very hard to treat all the same. So He says to not do it..but only in extreme situations.
but what makes me mad is that disgusting filthy men take advantage of this rule and use it to their desires.
I hope this helped you.

If you sincerely want to know, then I'd suggest you to visit good Islamic websites regarding this issue since Y!A is not a good place to get correct information on Islam.
Here is a link describing the subject:

The core answer to this question is, "It is only allowed for whoever is able to treat all wives equally and fairly. If he cannot be just and fair, it would be forbidden to take another wife."
In today's world of financial and social struggle, it seems that it is near impossible to treat more than a wife perfectly equally. That's why in real life, it is very hard to find a Muslim guy who has two or more wives at the same time.
**Why women can't have more than one husband?**
No. Women are not allowed to have more than one husband at the same time. It is natural, and that simple, and its not only practiced by Muslims, but women of all other religions tend not to have 2 husbands. Have you ever heard that a woman has 2 husbands? Will you ever find a guy who wishes to marry a girl who already has a husband? Also, is there any sane woman out there who wishes to have 2 or more husbands in a socially accepted way? Women talk about their rights, but no woman talked about having 2 husbands at the same time, whether she is Muslim or not. Yes, I personally know a woman in Bangladesh who raised this issue and wrote a book on it to create some unrest but in reality, she was never even able to have one husband, let alone two or more! So it is really easy for some people to ask such questions and bring up such weird issues but while taking it personally, they get vanished.

Yes. No it's not for women. If a woman had more than one husband she couldn't fulfill her duties to all of her husbands which is why a woman can only have 1 husband. A man can have up to 4 wives IF he can take care of them all and treat them equally. If he fears he can not than he should only take one wife. Also a man has to get the permission of his first wife to marry a second one. He can't just go marry another woman without telling his first wife. This is because all women should be protected and provided for and also because in some places there are more women than men. I'm the second wife to my husband. He has his first wife in Morocco.

In Islam a man can have up to 4 wives IF he can financially and emotionally support them all equally. If he cannot, then he is forbidden to marry more than once. Some Muslim countries have their own laws regarding this and require that a man have permission from his current wife to marry another. If she says no, then he cannot. They may also have strict rules regarding proof of capacity to support more than one woman and family.
As for the women, the are allowed one husband.

The prophet allows a man to have up to four wives and as many concubines as he can A) afford or B)put up with the noise of.
NO! It most emphatically does NOT cut both ways.
Think of the song from the King and I. It's soooooo true of patriarchal religions.
"A girl must be like a blossom,
With honey for just one man.
A man must live like honeybee,
And gather all he can.
To fly from blossom to blossom,
The honeybee must be free.
But blossoms must not EVER fly,
From bee to bee to bee!"

Females have no rights whatsoever in the 'original' Islam, which worshipped the Allah of Mohammed, the murderer. Now, Islam is so washed out (and changed who knows how many times) that they claim they are 'peaceful'. Go figure.
