You could start a collection for him. Maybe antique cars, trains, or tractors. You could even find cars or such that have numbers that correspond to his age. I will say that 1 and 2 are hard ages to buy for. You could get him a wagon for ourdoor play this summer or maybe a sandbox. My kids always loved those.

Here are a few ideas:
*Make a photo album or scrapbook of your baby's first year and put it away for him so he can have it when he's older. You could also make a mini-album that he can look at now, but make sure the pages are durable and non-toxic.
*Get a nice collection of toddler books to start a library for him. You could make it a tradition to add books each year on his birthday.
*Have a nice family portrait taken and save a copy for him when he gets older. (Again, you could make this an annual tradition)
*Take him someplace new. (Depending on where you live, maybe you could go to a pet store, a children's museum or a new playground. Keep it simple though.)
*Have a small party for a few close family members or friends.
Really, you don't need to do too much this year. He won't care that much about the gifts. Just make sure you get pictures with the cake... you'll treasure those for years!

My son turned 1 last month, and I really wanted something for a keepsake. So I got him a personalized book, it's really cute, he is the hero of the story, and 3 friends names or a pets name can be included. Read it to him the night of his birthday instead of his usual teddy stories. LOL
I also got him a silver moneybox in the shape of a boat, engraved with his name and a message from me. Both of these items were cheaper than what I expected. Mail me if you want more details.
I had a small party for him at a kids play center, as I didn't think my house was big enough to have crawling/ walking/ falling toddlers and their mums all at once!
Even if they don't realize what it is all about, you do! So make it as special as you want, take lots of photos/video, and tell him all about it when he can understand.

I did not buy my daughter a first birthday present bc she got so many from friends and family!
But I like to buy other people's kids music for their first birthday. There are a lot of good kids CDs that are not bad for parents either including the groups, Mother Goose Jazz Band, Laurie Berkner Band, and Dan Zanes. I also love School house rock!Put it in a big gift bag with lots of tissue so the baby can open it and have fun the wrapping!

How about:
- A wagon
- Little Tykes Slide (we had a small one in the house that kept my little boy entertained for hours!)
- Board Books
- Wooden Puzzles
- Push Toy (popper toy maybe)
- Musical Instruments (they have cute sets at Target)
- Kitchen Center (boys love them too at a year old)
- ride on toy they push with their feet
- Don't know who makes it but my son loved the ball toys that you put the plastic colored balls into the slots and it rolled down a path...kind of big...
- Outside baby swing
- Blow up baby pool (kind of warm in May)
- A rocking horse or zebra
- Child size rocking chair or tiny table and chair. They love to climb in and out of it.
- Sandbox
Have fun shopping! Hope he has a wondeful first birthday! SD

What about a share of stock in a childhood company like Disney? There's a great website www.oneshare.com where you can buy a share of stock and have it placed in a frame that says "My First Stock". It's something unique and it isn't another toy to clutter the room. :)

Your child is too young to really understand the idea of presents, so he will not be too sad if he doesn't get any. (Most one year olds I know would prefer cake!) If you want to do something special, why don't you take him on a fun mini day trip? You could try the pool, or a zoo (or a pet store), or an early-years center.

How about nothing? He won't remember anyways.
But, if you’re intent on getting him something, maybe get him a savings bond that will mature in 10 years. He’ll have more fun spending it when he turns 11 than he will now.
