They drown in the water. That's why special flea shampoo isn't necessary as the chemcals in it doesn't have any lasting effect.

any soap will - it coats their shell and they can't breathe. rather gruesome but it works

other things that kill fleas - diatomaceous (not sure of spelling) earth - which is dirt made up of a certain kind of ground up shells (very small) - it's sharp and gets in chinks of their shell, cuts it open, and they die by dehydration, sprinkle it as a barrier outside doors (like old trick of using borax as barrier to ants) also rather gruesome when you think about it

It isn't the dawn that kills them. Any soap will do. It makes them to heavy and they drown.
