I think there is more to this than you are saying. I can't imagine a supervisor being angry about what you said.. what I CAN imagine is you not giving any advance notice for his appointments, and just not showing up, and upsetting the schedule and inconveniencing your coworkers and making them cover for you at the last minute.
True emergencies are a different issue, but if you are just calling in to take vacation time at the last minute and saying it's for your father, I can understand why your supervisor is cheesed off.

It doesn't matter if your supervisor doesn't approve. They were your vacation hours to use as you saw fit. What if you had used those hours to stay at home reading, and your father had to be taken to the hospital during that time? Would your supervisor still be unhappy?

Supervisor sounds like he/she is unsympathetic and a jerk. If I was you, I wouldn't even questions what your supervisor thinks because family comes first regardless. I would reconsider finding a different job.
