Depends a lot on where you buy, how much you buy and other factors. If you're at the top of the food chain in Afghanistan, it's pretty cheap. If you're a neighborhood scumbag in Bed-Stuy, it's pretty expensive. Opium these days is usually refined into heroin because of the larger profit margins. Couldn't find any US street prices for opium, but maybe some of the following will be of interest:
The UN had this to say in 2003:
"Opium farmgate prices increased almost 10-fold ($300 per kg) at harvest time in 2001 compared to a year earlier as a consequence of the Taliban opium ban, and some 20-fold ($700 kg) prior to September 11. Despite a good harvest in 2002 - opium prices still amounted to around $350 at harvest time in 2002, and were about $450 at the end of the year;"
Or this from 2005:
"Ten years ago, I was paid 300 kyat ($3) per 1.6 kg. “But now they are offering 280,000 ($280) 300,000 kyat ($300).”
"In Afghanistan, overall prices for fresh opium at harvest time remained essentially stable at around US$100/kg in 2005. In Myanmar, the average farm gate price of opium at harvest time was estimated at US$ 187/kg ... In Lao PDR, the average farm gate price of opium increased to US$ 521"
"It is estimated that one kilo of opium produces approximately 100 grams of (pure) heroin. The US DEA confirms that "SWA [South West Asia meaning Afghanistan] heroin in New York City was selling in the late 1990s for $85,000 to $190,000 per kilogram wholesale with a 75 percent purity ratio.
DEA reports that an ounce of heroin usually sells for $2,500 to $5,000, a gram for $70 to $95..."
Don't know if any of that really answers your question though. Try googling "opium prices" and see what happens. The UN has a good page on "the world drug problem" and most big city police departments keep fairly detailed records if you can figure out how to access them. Major newspapers (NY Times, Washington Post, etc) probably have articles in their archives.
Good luck with your report.

Just buy some poppy seeds, which are very cheep at your local food cooperative.
You will not be able to buy opium. And if you did find a supplier, you would certainly not announce it publicly.
