Exfoliate with a warm wash cloth or gentle scrub now...
Moisturize...after exfoliation and tonight when you go to bed.
Put on a light oil-free moisturizer tomorrow before you go out. Most oil-free moisturizers can be worn under makeup as well.

You can't really cover up to hide the fact that you have dry skin. First exfoliate gently with a scrubbing cream like St. Ives Apricot scrub to get rid of dead skin. Then use a good moisturizer like Nivea Oil (white bottle). It's great and it will do wonders. If you don't mind the smell, try massaging plain olive oil or a bit of crisco all over your skin from tonight before going to bed and you will see dramatic improvement.

Before going to bed exfoliate your skin with a good exfoliate, oil free, i recommend something from loreal (best for dry skin). Massage your skin with your fingertips for a few minutes in circular and up and down movements, then rinse. After, apply a moisturizer for dry skin, make sure its oil free, once again i would recommend loreal or something from Witch.Massage your skin pay attention to the driest areas. I think that this routine helps a lot. Try to stick to it, do it every day.

I suffer with this too and find the best thing is to gently rub my face with a dry face cloth ( smal circular motions) and then use a gentle exfoliator on it - something like dove or body shop - them before bed put masses of diprobase cream on it (available from chemist) it should improve slightly and you will not have noticeable patches of dry skin. Hope it works for you.

I have the same problem and (in desperation) combed Boots one Saturday to find something to help.. and lo and behold! No. 7 Make Up base! They make one (in a blue tube) for getting rid of redness before make up, and one in a white tube that makes your skin COMPLETELY 'matte'.
I know usually people recommend stuff but I actually have this and never leave the house without it!
p.s. it only costs £9, and 99% of Boots stores will have it in the 'No7' section :-)

My mother in law did this every time she had an event. She got sugar and lime. Did a mixture of both and rubbed her face and specially her hands. Left it for 10 min. and washed it off. Important don't let the sun hit you with lime on your skin it make sure you take it all off. It really works. And is very inexpensive

E45 cream! I have quite dry skin & I smother it in E45 cream before I go to bed every night. Works a treat! Otherwise, try rubbing Vaseline into it before you go to bed. You'll look a bit shiney, but it'll be worth it in the morning.

Exfoliate (Soap lathered up and mixed with salt gets the softest skin) and moisturise loads overnight. Then use tinted moisturiser to cover up!

It the skin is of your face,
Then try a face cream or facial.
If it's on your body,
regular body cream works just as well as the fancy stuff, just apply it every hour or so
