It's silly but I just want to know why do they say OMG or God D....... if to them God doesn't exist?

It's for the simple purpose of mocking what you believers think is real. It's also just become a figure of speech, I celebrate Christmas, but only for food and presents.

I'll say it, but it's an old habit. Exclamations are often said without any thought as to what they may have originally meant.

In the 80s, the valley girl speak had, "Gag me with a spoon," which was the last thing they wanted to happen (even if it would have been for the best).

I don't believe in God, but it's an official part of my vocabulary thanks to 35 years of American culture.

Then again, I hear Christians referring to Fridays and Saturdays. Since they don't believe in Freya or Saturn, why do they use those words? Same basic concept.

It's just a phrase. It means nothing. It's like when you spend a lot of time around the same person and they always say some catch phrase, like "sweet dude", you pick it up after awhile and start saying it. It's just something you hear and subconsciously work it into your vocabulary or bank of phrases. That is what OMG or God Da... means to us. I could just as soon say Oh My FMS, but since it's not really a popular catch phrase that I ever hear and haven't been hearing since birth, it just doesn't come to mind when I speak.

It slips out once in a while, but for the most part, I am acutely aware of what I say. Of course, the Christian god is not the only god, so OMG could mean any one of hundreds of gods.

Those phrases are just common. When people say it they don't actually think about God usually - it's just an expression which everyone easily associates as a sign of shock. That's why atheists will say it as well sometimes.

It is just a saying. There are lots of sayings that are used today that go back to something that is no longer around these days.

The phrase "rule of thumb" is believed to come from various sources, one of which is about a law that said men could only beat their wives with a switch no wider than their thumb. Yet it is still used today.

yeah and bless you when you sneeze..its a conditioned reflex..they even take the name of God in name if they are so inclined to swear...and atheists say to their men.."god you are good/" but they have to take the oath in court on a bible and this cramps some of their style...omg..yes and that too..I wonder if God could be an atheists if he did not believe in people..???? ya think

Well, I'm an atheist and I don't say "OMG" etc.

The ones who DO however just use them as expressions and out of habit (a lot of them used to be Christians)... nothing more.

Sure I do. It's habit and conformity to society I guess. I say Good Lord, GD, OMG - all that stuff.

Yeah, it's weird. I don't even say "bless you" when somebody sneezes, or call people "sir" when they're not knighted by the Crown of England.

And holy poop? Why would god bless a steaming pile of poop?
