Without building any walls.

I've thought about painting one part one color and the other part another color, but how do I separate it? I don't want light blue and then a sudden change to light green or whatever... Or is there some way to add a small bar-like divider that isn't permanent? Or how can I paint two different colors without a sudden change...Any suggestions please!!

The small bar divider is a good way to divide the rooms. Pick 4 separate paints that match each other, each paint should bring out the beauty of the other colors,I would suggest light colors instead of dark colors. If the ideal of a bar is not your sty ll, then separate the rooms with furniture leaving enough space to walk from room to room.

You could separate it with a small bar like structure. You could build a half wall. The only way to paint with out creating a sudden change is to use two like colors that are light and blend together. Go to your local paint store or call a Contractor in your area for suggestions.

use the furniture. locate a chair and couch facing with the back toward the dining area compliment the sofa with a sofa table on the dining room side. behind the chair you could use a reading or area lamp. I thjink a change in paint color would be to drastic. if you build the half wals so they are portable you could vary the size of the areas as needed. IE larger dining area during the holidays.

how about columns from floor to ceiling, screen dividers, some kind of moldings? what about painting the wall shared by the two rooms one shade and the rest of the room another shade?
I can only think of some decorative molding to go all around from floor to ceiling. If you use small finish nails it will be easy to remove with not much damage to walls at all. other than that it would look funny to stop and start 2 different colors on a wall without looking funny.

Why not try a large area rug under one 'room' It would create two 'rooms' visually or place sofa with its back to the dining area and add a sofa table which is a long narrow table meant to be placed directly behind and against the back of a sofa...it is the height of a sofa or love seat so it makes a great divider.

put the back of the couch facing the dinning room. I did that in my apt. living room to create a hallway so it didn't look like the dinning room and office were in the living room... i would suggest keeping the same colors..but maybe a different type of accent to go with it
