Tell your brother to let you play with it first of all... second of all cairn terriers are nice if they are puppies but they can be nippy when they get older.. remember you are bigger than this doggy will ever be and when he does nip it doesnt hurt! When they are puppies they will bite to play just keep a doggy toy by your side to have him bite that instead of you!! =) But tell your brother to stop being a pain and to at least let you play with it!

Let the dog settle into his new surroundings first but when he/she is ready and calm sit on a chair with some doggy treats in your hand (don't call the dog or even look at it if make you uncomfortable) Wait for the dog to approach you. and when he sniffs your hand just drop the treat. Tell him he's a good boy (or girl) Talk softly to it and don't run around shouting and screaming. You don't need to get to petting it right away. Doesn't sound like the dog is going anywhere so take your time and get used to having him/her around and you should be fine. I was bitten by a dog when I was young too. I have 3 now and one of them is a great dane! Its how you treat the dog that builds the character not the breed. Would you believe pitbull terriers and staffy have a reputation for being really good with kids?

You should definitely visist the link below for more information on this type of terrier.

All dogs, like all people will react to the non-verbal emotions you give off. If you remember your experience as a three-year old and how painful it was, the dog is going to sense this, much the same way when we cross our arms or rest our hands on our hips while talking to someone - we are showing them our dissatisfaction. Approach this dog as your favorite thing, give it good vibes and he/she will respond accordingly.

As for your brother not letting you play with this dog, you are going to have to be respectful of that until he comes around to the notion of you interacting with his new puppy.

Tell your brother that his puppy needs to meet lots of people, so it will be socialized with them and will feel comfortable with them. Yes, they are nice little dogs, and besides, it's only a baby.

I don't understand first you say you want to play with it then after you say its your brothers and he won't let you suddenly you are afraid of it. If you are afraid of it then do what your brother says AND LEAVE THE DOG ALONE.
