I will need to be rather abruptly moving from Chicago to New York for my career very soon and need some help in deciding where to look for a reasonably priced home that would allow for daily travel to main Manhattan... I am not at all familiar with real estate in the city and do not even know where to begin. I am aware of the taxes and higher cost of living but am rather flexible and have accepted this. Any advice regarding nearby neighborhoods, et cetera would be appreciated.

inwood, washington heights, bronx, queens are not too bad but if those areas are still too steep try new jersey or conn. either way you're going to have to commute.

The cheaper areas of NYC might be to much of a culture-shock for you. I think you should try looking at a place in Jersey near the Jersey public transportation.

Generally as a rule in Manhattan the more uptown (farther away from downtown Manhattan or main Manhattan as you called it) you go the cheaper it is. However, uptown Manhattan has some very nice areas and as long as your near an express subway line it is fine.

Also most of NYC is really overpriced these days. There are not too many bargains left. Good luck. Start checking out craigslist.org

you can rent a studio apt 600Sqt Ft. for about 1300$.
if you get closer to mid town, this goes up.

I would rent in middle Brooklyn, queens or Bronx. It will cost you 800$ for the same place. But, if you move closer to Manhattan, it will increase.
To name a few, look in long island city, bay side, lower east side, etc.

You really will want to consider CT> or NJ as your residence, both pricewise and availability.
