Common sense guides you in life. As for murderers are you having a laugh, or have been hiding somewhere that your've not heard of suicide bombers who btw are atheists imo.

Yes, never had it in me to be a rapist or mugger but commit a murder or get revenge was definitely there, I was not a nice person and you wouldn't of seen it coming, I used to be full of hatefulness and anger and considered taking it out on others who walk around oblivious to things that are happening in the world around them. God saved me from this, I am no longer hateful or angry and instead of seeking revenge I turn it over to God (lucky for you John Q. Public). I have become a totally different person because of Jesus, no one else, just Jesus. And yes I needed the book to tell me what to do instead of just doing as I wanted now I strive to do what God wants.

My view on this is simple, people are inherintly bad. Look at children, they lie, cheat, steal all of the worst of humanity is present in little kids. They have to be taught not to do those things by people that have been integrated into society. As a Christian and a reasonable human being, no I would never strap a bomb to my chest and blow people away. And no I don't need the words of Jesus Christ to tell me not to do that, but the teachings of Jesus make me and millions of other people better. That's not to say that I believe that I am a good person apart from my faith in Jesus Christ. The blood of Jesus is the only thing that makes me acceptable in the eyes of God. True Christian people have nothing in common with extreme Muslim jihadists if that is what you are wondering.

I have seen many people of the religions in the question say that atheists have no morals because they dont have any guidance like the bible - implying that the Bible is the only thing to keep people morally right.
Many of the above answers state that they do not need the bible to tell them morals; may i ask what they need it for then? Scientific insight? - no, we have science for that. I noticed one person saying that they do not get their morals from the bible but when deciding who is wrong and who is right they check it. I personally would not trust a 2000 year old book for items like that - they most certainly did not have many of the issues we find in moral conundrums today; the technology was not around for a start.
Many may say they need it for spiritual fulfillment but why only choose one religion and one holy book? What makes them think that that religion and book is correct above all others? I find many of those religious people quote from the holy book of their religion to state why it is correct; of course it will tell it's reader that it is correct; it is trying to form and hold a religion!
To correct myself from this tangent I have led off at; they do not need their holy books for those morals. If you look at extremist Islam though, however, you will see that their holy book and religion causes them to break standard morals. To quote Richard Dawkins; 'Good people will do good things, bad people will do bad things but for a good person to do a bad thing it takes religion'.

If I commit crimes I could be arrested by the civil authority and spend years of my life in prison. Not my idea of a good time. In a place where no authority existed to control the actions of people murder, rape, and theft would be the norm and honesty and goodness would be the exception... Jim

Too bad what ever book you are reading has not told you to stop hating and start thinking.
I have heard if you put tinfoil on the windows the voices don't get through.

Morals are relative to our culture. Would you say murder is wrong? I think you would. However, you would not have found it wrong if you lived in the ages of the Old Testament where death by stoning was common practice. I think that counts as murder.

Actually no, I have the same inbuilt moral instinct for right and wrong that you have, which is given by God in the first place, actually it is interesting that you are showing the truth of the Bible verses Romans 1:19,20

most people have a conscience. What does religion have to do with any of what you ask? I suppose acting out violently is partly a result of one's upbringing. Most people do not commit crimes, most are honest and avoid altercations or situations leading to violence and other crimes.
Hey, go to church sometime!

If you didn't get morals from a higher authority then what validity do they have?
If all earth is a natural occurrence of time+chance+matter then anything that happens on earth is right.
If murder happens here it is right. There is no higher authority to tell us it is wrong. If it is here. then it exists. If it is here it cannot be WRONG, unless there is right.
Wrong and right cannot be determined be anything other than a higher authority. Morals have no weight without authority behind them and with out authority morals would no exist.
