get down on one knee.. and speak from the heart
I love the proposal that Richard Gere and Julian Roberts said to each other ( @ different intervals) in the movie..
the Runaway Bride
"Look, I guarantee that we'll have tough times. And I guarantee that at some point, one or both of us will want to get out of this thing. But I also guarantee that if I don't ask you to be mine I'll regret it for the rest of my life. Because I know in my heart, you're the only one for me."

Doing the best you can with what you have is a beautiful thing. Promise rings are inexpensive and pretty. You can always upgrade after you've graduated and started your career. If your intended loves you as much as it sounds like you love her, everything will work itself out. Don't overextend yourself financially. Money problems in a marriage are the short road to the courthouse. You don't want to start off that way. She has your heart...that's enough.

We were grad students when my husband proposed. He love to spend time on the lake so he went to the store and bought some nice picnic items, brought my dogs with (which was really important to me) and we found a secluded place had lunch and he proposed. Think of what is special to you and her and incorporate that. The fact that he included my dogs meant SO much to me!! Good luck!!

When my hubby proposed last year, he planned as scavenger hunt for me. I lived in a high-rise apartment complex on the 14th floor. When got home one day, there was a card on my door that said not to enter yet b/c I was going on a scavenger hunt. Then that card told me to go to the pool for the next clue. Each card had something from our previous dates (ticket stubs from 1st movie, plays, etc...) and said on this day we did this, or this is where we 1st kissed, etc...The last clue said "April 22, 2006- To find out what happens on this day, meet me on your balcony." The envelope on my balcony door had cards strung together "Will You Marry Me?"- one word on each card. Then he got on one knee & asked. Then he asked me to dance on the balcony to our song.
