I want my next dog to just sit at my feet or across the room from me. Dogs that follow me around and need constant attention are annoying. I don't need a lecture, just name some breeds please. I can do my own research on them.

chow chows are great. When you come home they are happy to see you, then they go and do their own thing. They are not annoying at all. Don't get a greyhound. They are very loving.

I have heard these traits described in a Chesapeake Retreiver but they are also somewhat single minded about what they want to do. Swim and retrieve! You may not want a clingy breed but you don't mention what other interests you have. If you like to run or walk daily, you may want a dog who can do things with you. I can't see the point of a dog at all if you don't either want to do things with it or you don't want to really cuddle it. You say just lie at your feet? Get a cat.

Many of the northern breeds (alaskan malamute, siberian huskies, greenland dogs, etc...) are very affectionate but also independent. They will be happy to see you but won't feel the need to follow you around everywhere, and they can take care of themselves. Otherwise, most sight hounds (afghan hound, greyhound, whippet, etc...) would be good. If you get a greyhound, be sure to adopt a retired racer- they are usually only a few years old, and make excellent pets.

Having been a breeder of afghan hounds for a long time, and currently have 3 greyhounds, I would truly hate to see you get any kind of sight hound. Contrary to what some people are telling you, these dogs are very affectionate to their people and would not do at well belonging to someone like you.
