The product label says to use alcohol cautiously because amitriptyline increases drowsiness and dizziness. So, there isn't a risk of creating some toxic chemical reaction with the alcohol, the risk comes from lowering your tolerance to alcohol. It looks like driving would be out of the question if you are drinking even small amounts while on this medication.

It will enhance the effect of the amitriptyline. It could also cause Central Nervous System Depression...meaning it can cause a person to stop breathing.

How should I take amitriptyline?

Follow all directions on your prescription label. Do not take this medicine in larger or smaller amounts or for longer than recommended.
It may take up to 4 weeks before your symptoms improve. Keep using the medication as directed and tell your doctor if your symptoms do not improve.
If you need surgery, tell the surgeon ahead of time that you are using amitriptyline. You may need to stop using the medicine for a short time.
Do not stop using amitriptyline suddenly, or you could have unpleasant withdrawal symptoms. Ask your doctor how to safely stop using amitriptyline.
Store at room temperature away from moisture, heat, and light.

No alcohol with amitritpyline. Both are sedating and should not be used together. Never drink alcohol when taking this type of a medication.

You should ask a pharmacist. Some meds just loose their effectiveness with alcohol. Others, well my husband's chemotherapy drug makes him react violently to alcohol, like he's allergic to it.
