Chili powder will not make it hot - it's usually made from sweeter and milder chili peppers. When you talk about spicy, it can mean hot or just well seasoned.
basic chili should always have chili powder, paprika, cumin and oregano. There should be twice as much chili powder as paprika and oregano and less on the cumin - that would make it well seasoned. If you want high heat, nothing works better than cayenne pepper. Add it in small amounts over time and taste it to make sure you don't make it too hot. Don't forget the salt and you could put in a little sugar if you like it

Try fresh hot pepper.

A cap full or two white vinegar, this will bring out all of the spiciness and other seasonings.

I also like to put a teaspoon of mustard into mine.

Most important, don't use a recipe! Just throw in the main ingredients and adjust to taste!

You can try the hot sauce. Just do a couple shakes at a time and taste it.

Or I have thrown medium hot salsa into my chili, about 1/4 cup. That has hot peppers in it.

a generous amount of hot chilli powder and chopped birds eye chillis - I used a whole packet which is about 10 or 12 of the small hot red ones.

I add hot sauce to mine all the time. I especially like the flavor of Frank's Red Hot sauce. A little black pepper won't hurt any either.

Relax - it's going to be just fine!

My little secret spice in chili is a can of Rotel. I think it adds just the right amount of spice and heat.
