India is setting up the Sixth Pay Commission to increase the salaries of central government employees, at an additional cost of Rs 20,000 crore per year.

While the move is being cheered by government staff, economists fear that it will impose an unbearable burden on India's public finances of up to Rs 60,000 crore per year as even the states will now have to hike employees' wages.

With the state governments yet to emerge from the shock of the previous pay commission recommendations, the new load could badly hit the country's growth plans. Some say it will derail the Indian economy.

Political observers say that the United Progressive Alliance government took the decision buckling under pressure from the Left parties and trade unions.

The World Bank in a 2004 report had criticised India's earlier pay panel and termed it as the single largest setback to India's public finances.

Do you think the new pay panel proposals will cripple India's economy? Are political compulsions overriding economic sense? Or do you think this is a fair move and salaries of government staff must be increased?

Government should plan to rationalise the pay scales in tune with present pay scales of fresh and less experienced Software Engineers who get a pay of 2.5 lakh per annum in case of fresh graduates and goes as high as 2 to 3 lakhs per month . IIM - MBA graduates are getting very high salary.

Weightage should be given for the qualification and experience ; otherwise parents will not get even 50% of salary of what their wards get even after 30 yrs of experience.

All Government employees / bank employees get less salary considering their work load compared to the
Software engineers.

Other professionals like Civil engineers/ Mechanical Engineers/ Doctors etc are getting low salary.

Scientists are not getting enough. Hence nobody is interested to take up research activities.

For increasing salary , finance should not be a reason.

Minimum salary should be increased very much for lower grade staff. All payscales should be rationalised and through out India uniform pay structure should be formulated in Government as well as private sector

Government should take steps to increase tax collection , by making PAN number compulsory for every one and income determined on the basis of income and expenditure. This will multiply tax collection many folds.

Will the Government utilise this opportunity of 6th Pay commission ?
