Is there a difference between enlisting for 4 years active (4 inactive) and 6 years active (2 inactive) in terms of staying on an air force base. If I choose to enlist for 6 years active, do I have to stay in one location the entire time or can I request to transer from time to time? If i'm active for longer, do I have more of a say about being at a base close to my hometown so i can be close to my family? How does that all work?

Second question: Who's better the Thunderbirds or Blue Angels???

1) Standard tour length is now 4 years. You can't request to be transfered (PCS'd) from time to time, though you can put in for voluntary short tours (you'll travel by yourself to a remote base for a 1 year assignment) but chances are at the moment that if you only join for 4 years that you'll serve out your entire time at one base.
The way it works is this: You'll submit a list of the bases you would prefer to go to in ranked order. They will select which base they need you at, while TRYING to meet one of your choices.

2) Thunderbirds are obviously better, but then again, i might be biased

When I was in the Air Force as a new recruit...I learned one thing...you do as the military tells you!

There are programs available to assist you in going to assignments of your choice. You will learn about the "dream sheet" or request for specific assignments.

You are subject to move at any time based upon the needs of the service!

As for the question about Thunderbirds versus Blue Angels...being retired USAF...I'd say Thunderbirds. However, BOTH flying performance teams are of the highest caliber pilots with a very difficult mission. The teams are comprised of military personnel who are the "cream of the crop" or best of the best!

They perform in an outstanding manner to provide public awareness of the military services.

Best wishes!

1. The chances of you staying put for 4 years is much greater now. They have increased the time on station to reduce the costs of moving families around. When I was overseas it was an 18 month tour, now its 2 years for single. I was however in the states less than a year when I had another assignment overseas. It will depend on your job and the needs of the military.
2. I like them both. I knew a lot of the blue Angels though. Both are good. Something about a man in a flight suit......sigh.....

Inactive duty is just this, When you are discharged from active duty, you resume your normal life, but if needed in an extremely rare instance, they have the option to call you back to active duty, I have never heard of this happening. Assignments are based on where they need you most, you give them your choices of where you want to go, and they will try to get you there, but if they can't use you there, you will assigned elsewhere. I have been in 14 years and have only got 2 assignments that were my choice.

Oh, Thunderbirds, of course.

Re; T birds or blueangels. Both are spectacular.

Here's the diff..The Blue angels are more capable of landing and taking off from a small airport or short runway.

In my city (Reading PA) with a 6200 ft runway, theAngles stayed here. The T Birds operated outof Middletown, PA where there is a 10,000 ft runway. You don't get a chance to see the aircraft up close or talk to the pilots and ground crew.
