What do I have to do in order to purchase a handgun in the state of Maryland.?

What is the processed involved with the purchase of a handgun. I've never bought one before. This will be a totally new experience. Any and all advice is welcomed.

The easiest way might be to move to a more conservitive state farther from D.C..
That or get yourself deputized.
