You could simply 'ignore' the rumor and go on about your life in a way that will show the 'rumor mongers' to be IDIOTS ... because if you actually 'do' anything, like 'tell this guy off in front of his friends' or 'talk to him when the two of us are alone' you'll be just adding 'fuel' to that 'rumor.'
When my husband and I had first gotten engaged, at least eight people told me not to marry him because they 'knew' he was gay. I had to laugh at that, because I knew he wasn't gay ... he was just 'raised by three strong women' (his mother and two much older sisters) and he didn't 'talk' the way most guys talk, especially about women. The rumor of his 'gayness' was wrong, and we've been EXTRMELY HAPPY for ten years and are even more in love now than we were 'back then' ... and all I had to do to get here was to 'ignore the rumors.'

Let the rumor pass. It's really the only thing you can do. If the guy approaches answer him nicely but honestly. If you feed into rumors things will only get worse.

I would make out with either the person spreading or the person who started the rumour, the more witnesses who see you do this the better. That should pretty well confuse the question about who you like.
