They can be. If your daughter is good with dogs and taught to treat it gently and the right way, and if the chi is brought up as a puppy with her, then i cant see any problems. One of my chis is great with kids, the other is nervous of them, but never snappy. One was brought up around kids, the other wasnt. I think thats the key really.

That's a tough one. A tiny dog and small kids sometimes don't make a good match. Simply put its' small size together with active kids around can get poochie easily hurt, but that doesn't mean if you have kids Chihuahuas are out of the question. As far as Chihuahuas taking to kids goes, they become attached and loyal to anyone who is a part of the household. You should however consider getting one that will reach 5 or more pounds when grown. Teach your kids to have respect for and gentleness towards animals and under no circumstances should you leave a toddler or infant alone with a dog, any dog, no matter whether it's friendly and good natured, or a puppy or whatever. better yet I don't recommend leaving the dog alone with any children under the age of six unless closely supervised.

They can be nippy and tempermental. They tend to be one person dogs. It's not only that the dog should be good with the kid, it's the other way around, with such a small breed, they OFTEN get injured by kids, accidently. The dogs are small and hyper and tend to get under your feet. Kids wind up stepping on their feet/legs, dropping them, or falling on them They are pretty delicate dogs. Something a little bigger like a corgi or sheltie would be better. There are many places that won't even sell chihuahuas to homes with kids under age 13. My sister has one that is 4...she has a 2 yr old now and it is really hard for her to keep them separated all the time. The dog is also fiercely attached to her husband and can get snippy when he is on his lap. I'd wait or go w/ a different breed.

No Chihuahuas are small, frail little dogs with a soft spot on their head just like a human baby. They are NOT appropriate pets for small children who often hurt them sometimes not meaning to and then the dog bites them in retaliation and ends up in a dogpound or put to sleep. Wait until she is older to get a dog.

I grew up with a chihuahua she was very gentle. When she had puppies, the first few days she was very protected of them. She never bite us just growed. They make very good pets. My sister has one now and her grandkids love him. Their ages are 1, 5, & 7. they do like to bark alot. You can trained them not to.

Chihuahuas are quite tasty and there's no reason why a five year old wouldn't like them.

Any breed can be good with kids. You have to judge the dog individually.

they can be a little highly strung, so if you did, you wouldn't be able to leave her unsupervised with the dog. especially as chihuahuas are small, if she tries to pick it up it may snap at her.
i suggest waiting until shes a bit older, i wouldn't do it myself.
