Here's an example that I personally witnessed:
A preacher's wife (Baptist) with 8 children.. her youngest at the time was 3 years old. She locked this poor girl in a closet and refused to let her out until she accepted Jesus as her savior.. she told this girl that the dark closet was what Hell is like. This happens more often than people would like to admit.. it's a perfect example of religious teachings based on fear turning into child abuse.
Her excuse was that the rapture was coming (this was in 1990 btw) and she wasn't going to have her child left behind.

I was listening to the podcast of the Skeptics Guide to the Universe the other day. They said that 41 (I think) U.S. states have laws in the books that protect partents from legal action should their child suffer harm as a result of religious practice. The example they brought up had to do with parents in Oregon not having surgery performed on their kid who has a brain tumor, because their psychic said it wasn't a tumor.

When they're supernatural rather than ethical. And when it stunts the child's ability to respect other cultures from different geographical areas AND different times in history.
Would you send your child into the world talking about fairies and leprechauns? The first time they blamed a misplaced report on gnomes, it might hinder their job evaluation, right?

This is the one area that I wish the state would step in on the religion.
It is such a vague notion, but preaching intolerance and hatred is just as abusive as hitting the child for sinning or...worse yet...impure thoughts.

When the prevent children from thinking, reasoning and learning. Jesus Camp was definitely abuse. Those children have little hope of ever learning anything. I won't even allow my pagan and atheists friends try to indoctrinate my kids. Everyone is permitted to share their belief with my children but there is NO RIGHT ANSWER and ABSOLUTELY NO MENTION OF THINGS LIKE SIN OR HELL. It is mean to hurt another, we don't do it because it hurts.

If you purposely frighten a child... threaten them with eternal suffering, that is abuse.
Really... would tell your child there IS a monster in the closet?

I have a neighbor who home schools her kids because the secular world is "sinful." They are all growing up socially retarded.
This is child abuse.

when you try to force it on your children. That's the difference between religion and relationship. Religion are so rule oriented, relationship is so love oriented. You do the things God wants because you love Him, not because some man willed you to do so.
